When you’re getting ready to move, you need to have a complete moving checklist so you can prepare and pack. This will ensure you think of everything and have all your belongings packed securely so that nothing gets damaged by your moving team. Here’s how to prepare:

Get Plenty of Boxes

You need to ensure you have enough boxes for your move to avoid having to cram belongings during your move. It’s good to have high quality boxes that have never been used before. This will ensure that they are sturdy enough for everything you plan on putting inside. If you use boxes that have been recycled, they could end up falling apart in the middle of your move – especially when they are stacked on top of each other.

You also want to make sure you have different sizes of boxes. Remember, some items are going to be heavier than others. Extremely heavy items shouldn’t be in large boxes because it makes it difficult to lift them Take a look at our guide for where to find boxes for your move!

Allow Time for Packing

Many people make the mistake of not allowing enough time to handle the packing. This is not a task that you can handle the night before moving day. Instead, start a few weeks out and start packing the things that you aren’t going to need any time soon. Then, as you get closer to moving day, pack your more essential things.

Empty Everything

It’s important to empty everything. Otherwise, you run the risk of things being left behind, furniture being too heavy, and items being damaged.

Make sure to empty all:

  • Closets
  • Cabinets
  • Dressers

Start a system so you know what you have and have not emptied. If you have already emptied something, put a post-it note or a piece of colored tape on it. If it doesn’t have a marker on it, then you know it’s something you still have to unpack.

Go Room by Room

You need to go through your home room by room to make sure you have packed up absolutely everything. This includes bedrooms, closets, attics, garages, and everything else.

Label All of Your Boxes

Once moving day is over, you have the chore of unpacking everything. Some things are going to be more important to access than others. This is why it’s critical for you to label all of your boxes. Identify not only what group they belong in, but some of the key items inside the box. You will be able to find your dishes, towels, and other items after when you take the time to do this.
