Someone loves our IG account so much they stole it.

Dear Roadway friend,

You read about things like this in the news but never think it will happen to you. With pain in our hearts…

…we must tell you that it happened to us.

On Saturday, June 25th, early in the morning, we received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number. This person claimed to have hacked our @roadwaymoving Instagram account and threatened to delete or sell it if we wouldn’t pay the ransom he demanded in Bitcoins. This had to be some sick joke, right? In a few seconds, we found out that it was not. When we opened our page, all the content we were so proud of and worked hard for was gone.

The only hope we had for getting our Instagram back was by paying the ransom. So even though it was outrageous, we did – but what followed next was even harder to bear.

The hackers had lied to us. Although we gave them what they wanted, our account was deleted. We lost tens of thousands of followers and over seven years of hard work. This page was the pride of our company, and we depended on Instagram as a place to communicate to our community, employees, and partners.

This news broke our hearts.

Despite countless attempts of our team to reach out to Instagram, Facebook, and about everyone we know who might be able to help, we haven’t been able to restore our account. We won’t stop fighting for it yet, but it’s starting to look like no one can save us, and we have lost it forever.

To see everything you worked so hard for disappear is deeply painful. So please, let our loss be a reminder to step up your security game. Be aware of the malicious people out there, reset your password, and add two-factor authentication and other security measures available. And make sure that they can’t touch you. We don’t want this to happen to anyone else.

It’s hard not to take it personally when our company was founded on a solid foundation of making a positive change and doing good in the world.
