The best time to move is spring or fall (but we move year-round)

But for you, the seasons matter. New Jersey winters bring cold, snow, ice, and the occasional nor’easter that can shut down roads for a day. Loading and unloading in freezing weather is miserable, and it is hard on your belongings too. Electronics, candles, houseplants, and wood furniture don’t do well sitting in a cold truck or a chilly, empty house.

Summers bring heat and heavy humidity, plus peak demand that pushes moving rates up. Late summer is the busiest stretch of all, since so many leases turn over at once. Spring (April through early June) and fall (September through November) are the sweet spots: milder temperatures, less weather drama, and better availability.

If you need to move in January, we’ll get it done. Just keep the walkways shoveled and salted at both addresses so everyone stays safe, and have the heat on at your new place before the crew arrives.

Whenever you move, pack your essentials (medications, phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes) separately and keep them with you rather than on the truck. You don’t want to be digging through a stack of boxes on your first night in the new place.

Reserve a parking spot for the moving truck

In New Jersey’s denser towns, the hardest part of moving day often isn’t the stairs, it’s finding a place to legally park the truck close to your door. Curb space in places like Hoboken, Jersey City, and parts of Newark is fiercely contested, and you can’t count on an open spot being there when you need it.

There is no single statewide rule, so it comes down to your town. Hoboken requires Temporary No Parking (TNP) signs from the Hoboken Parking Utility, which you reserve online or in person, and the city typically needs the request well in advance (often a week or more) so the signs can be posted before your date. Jersey City requires a traffic permit to obtain no-parking signs or meter bags. Other towns have their own rules, and some have none at all.

One important note: many of these towns enforce alternate-side street cleaning, and a moving permit does not override it, so check the schedule for your block.

Make sure your movers are licensed in New Jersey

New Jersey is one of the states that licenses movers. Any company performing moves within the state is required to hold a Public Movers and Warehousemen license from the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. That license comes with real consumer protections: minimum insurance coverage, rates filed with the state, written estimates after an in-home or virtual survey, and a formal claims process.

Before you book any mover, it’s worth verifying their license. You can look up a company’s license status and complaint history through the Division of Consumer Affairs online license search. A reputable mover will have no problem sharing their credentials.

Many buildings require a Certificate of Insurance (COI)

If you’re moving into a high-rise, condo, or managed building in New Jersey (especially along the Jersey City and Hoboken waterfront, or in downtown Newark), building management will likely require your moving company to provide a Certificate of Insurance before they allow the move.

This protects the building in case of damage. When getting quotes from movers, ask if they can provide a COI. A professional moving company should provide this at no extra charge. Roadway Moving is fully insured and we provide COIs to our customers as part of our standard service.

Reserve the elevator and loading dock

In larger apartment buildings and high-rises, you’ll often need to reserve a freight elevator and loading dock time slot in advance. The waterfront towers in Jersey City and Hoboken can book up fast, and some buildings only allow moves during specific hours or on certain days. Contact your building management as soon as you have a move date locked in. Missing your slot can mean rescheduling your entire move.

Plan around New Jersey tolls and traffic

New Jersey is toll country. The New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, and the Atlantic City Expressway all charge tolls, and E-ZPass is by far the cheapest and easiest way to pay. If you’re driving your own car without a transponder, you’ll typically be billed by mail through the toll-by-plate system at a higher rate.

If your move crosses into or out of New York City, budget extra time and money for the crossings. The Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, and George Washington Bridge all carry steep Port Authority tolls and some of the heaviest congestion in the region, especially at rush hour.

Traffic on the Turnpike, the Parkway, and routes like I-287, I-78, and I-80 can be brutal during peak hours, roughly 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM. If you’re moving with Roadway Moving, don’t worry about tolls for our trucks. They’re already included in your flat-rate quote, and because we offer flat-rate pricing, you won’t pay extra if our crew gets caught in traffic.

It happens all the time: your lease ends on the 30th but you can’t get into your new place until the 3rd.
