What “Unpacking” Actually Means

Movers unbox. They don’t organize. Watch us explain the difference so you know exactly what to expect and what to plan for on delivery day.

Setting Expectations

Unboxing is not organizing

The word “unpacking” creates confusion. Here’s what moving companies actually do versus what many customers expect.

What You Get (Unboxing)
  • All boxes opened and contents removed
  • Items placed on counters, tables, or flat surfaces
  • Packing paper and wrapping materials removed from items
  • All boxes broken down and removed from the home
  • Furniture assembled and placed in designated rooms
What You Won’t Get (Organizing)
  • Items arranged in cabinets, drawers, or closets
  • Kitchen organized by category or preference
  • Clothes hung in closets or folded into drawers
  • Decorative styling or interior arrangement
  • Decisions about where things “should go”

Expert Tips

Did you know there’s actually a right way to unpack your moving boxes? It might seem straightforward, but unpacking strategically can save you time, reduce stress, and help protect your belongings. From starting with your essentials to organizing room by room, a few simple steps can make settling into your new home much easier.

Watch this quick video for expert tips on how to unpack efficiently and get comfortable in your new space faster.

Why the Distinction Matters

The most common source of frustration after a move is the gap between what customers expect and what actually happens. When you book unpacking, you are booking a crew of movers to open every box, remove every item from its wrapping, and take away the packing debris. That is a significant service: it can save you 4 to 8 hours of work depending on the size of your home.

But it is not the same as having someone organize your new home. Movers are trained in careful handling, lifting, and protecting your belongings. They are not trained in interior design, kitchen layout, or closet systems. Those are different skills entirely.

Our Honest Recommendation

We will be straight with you, because plenty of movers will not. In our industry, unpacking is often sold as an easy add-on or a profit center. We do not look at it that way. We do not recommend buying unpacking unless you have people on hand to help you, or you have booked a professional organizer to work alongside the crew. Without that, you may end up with every item out of its box and sitting on a counter, which is exactly the service you paid for, but rarely what you pictured.

Two Ways to Book Unpacking

Pick the level of help that matches how you want your new home to feel at the end of the day.

Standard

Unpacking

Our standard service. The crew opens every box, removes items from their wrapping, places them on counters and flat surfaces, and hauls away all packing debris. Nothing is put away into cabinets or closets.

Unpacked & stowed

Unpacking Plus

For customers who want their home put away by the end of the day. The crew places items into cabinets and storage rather than leaving them on counters. This is not professional organizing and we will not label or style your space, but you will walk into a home that is unpacked and stowed, ready for you to arrange to your taste. Ask your relocation specialist for pricing.

The Real Story

“My wife booked unpacking for our move. The movers opened every box, took out every item, removed the paper, and left everything on the counters. She called me from a hotel that night. She thought ‘unpacking’ meant they would put everything away. That is organizing. That is a completely different service.”
